DDP stands for Delivered Duty Paid, one of the Incoterms (international trade terms)
Under the DDP term, the seller (shipper) is responsible for:
All costs to transport the goods to the buyer's specified destination
Handling export customs clearance
Arranging international transport (sea freight, air freight, or land transport)
Completing import customs clearance in the importing country (Germany)
Paying all duties, VAT, and other taxes
Bearing all risks during the transportation process
The buyer (consignee) is responsible for:
Only receiving the goods at the destination
Simple understanding: You hand your goods to us. We handle China export + Germany import + duty payment + final delivery. Your German customer only needs to wait for the goods to arrive at their door.
Seller maintains full control throughout the process: From shipment to delivery, the seller is in control, resulting in a better customer experience
Reduces buyer's burden: German buyers do not need to deal with complex EU import customs clearance and duty calculations
Suitable for buyers without import qualifications: Many small and medium-sized German buyers do not have import rights or are unwilling to handle customs clearance; DDP directly solves this problem
Enhances seller's competitiveness: Chinese sellers offering DDP services are more attractive than those offering only FOB or CIF
Clear boundary of responsibilities: The seller bears all responsibility until the goods are delivered, zero risk for the buyer
Convenient for cross-border e-commerce: For sellers targeting the German market, DDP is the most hassle-free logistics method
The seller must have export rights: Possess import and export operating rights, able to handle Chinese export customs clearance properly
The seller must be able to arrange international transport: Find a reliable freight forwarder to provide a complete service including booking, trucking, customs clearance, and sea/air transport
The seller must be able to handle German import customs clearance: Need to be familiar with German customs regulations, commodity classification, and VAT rules
The seller must be able to prepay duties and VAT: DDP requires the seller to prepay all EU import taxes and fees
Both seller and buyer must clearly agree in the contract: Key information such as delivery address, delivery time, product description, and HS code
Choose a freight forwarder that can truly handle DDP: This is the most critical condition. Not all forwarders dare to or can handle真正的 DDP
Sea freight (FCL or LCL): Suitable for bulk goods, products with flexible delivery timelines
Air freight: Suitable for high-value goods or urgent deliveries
Rail transport: China-Europe Railway, transit time and cost between sea and air, suitable for the German market
Express courier (such as DHL, UPS, FedEx): Suitable for small parcels, samples, high-value products
Multimodal transport: Sea-rail intermodal, air-air intermodal, and other combinations
Conclusion: DDP term applies to all modes of transport. The key is the forwarder's customs clearance and delivery capability at the German destination port or address.

Question 1: For DDP to Germany, does the seller need to register for German VAT?
Not necessarily. If using the freight forwarder's VAT account or a dual-clearance tax-included service, the seller does not need to register for German VAT themselves
Sunny Worldwide Logistic provides dual-clearance tax-included DDP service. The seller only needs to provide product information and a commercial invoice. We handle the German import VAT
Note: If the seller has a permanent establishment in Germany or annual sales exceed the distance selling threshold, they must register for VAT themselves. It is recommended to consult a tax advisor
Question 2: For DDP to Germany, how many days does it typically take?
Sea freight DDP: From major Chinese ports to Hamburg, approximately 35-45 days total (including customs clearance and final delivery)
China-Europe Railway DDP: From Xi'an/Chengdu to Duisburg, approximately 25-30 days total
Air freight DDP: From major Chinese airports to Frankfurt, approximately 7-10 days total
We will provide you with three transit time options, and you can choose freely based on your delivery deadline and budget
Question 3: Under the DDP term, if German customs inspects or seizes the goods, who bears the responsibility?
In principle, the seller (or freight forwarder) bears the responsibility, because the seller is responsible for import customs clearance under the DDP term
If the seizure is caused by issues with the goods themselves (such as infringement, prohibited items, declaration discrepancies), the responsibility is borne by the seller
If caused by errors in the customs clearance operation, the responsibility is borne by the freight forwarder
Sunny Worldwide Logistic strictly reviews product information before operation, proactively informs clients of potential risks, and minimizes the possibility of inspection and seizure
