MSC Halts PERAL Service, Adds Xiamen to SENTOSA Route

Service Suspension and Route Adjustment

MSC advised customers late yesterday that the PERAL loop (Asia–Mediterranean) will be halted with immediate effect and remain suspended until further notice. The carrier cited “ongoing operational challenges” but did not provide a resumption date.

Simultaneously, MSC confirmed that the SENTOSA service (Asia–North Europe) will now call Xiamen, strengthening connectivity for South-East China cargo. The revised port rotation is:

Shanghai → Ningbo → Xiamen (new) → Yantian → Tanjung Pelepas → Rotterdam → Antwerp → Hamburg → Felixstowe → Le Havre → Port Kelang → Singapore → Shanghai.

Impact on Shippers

• PERAL: All bookings already confirmed on PERAL sailings will be rolled to alternative services (AE1, AE6, or Dragon). MSC is issuing new booking confirmations within 48 hours.
• SENTOSA: Extra Xiamen call adds one day to the eastbound leg; MSC guarantees original cut-off dates for cargo already gated-in at other load ports.
• Capacity: Industry analysts estimate the PERAL withdrawal removes ~40,000 TEU weekly capacity on the Asia-Med corridor, which may tighten space and push short-term rates up 5–8 %.

Recommended Actions

  1. Review existing PERAL bookings and accept MSC’s rebooking proposal promptly.

  2. For time-critical cargo, consider SENTOSA’s Xiamen connection or MSC’s AE1 service, which offers the fastest transit to Valencia.

  3. Update delivery forecasts with customers to reflect the additional day on SENTOSA eastbound.
